Candy Coated Apples for ALL Seasons!

Haven't done a recipe in ages so here is a new one! Got this idea from another blog and decided to take my own twist to it. Its an autumn/fall/halloween thing but why not during spring or summer? Or for that matter any holiday with the right flavors and colors! Keeping in mind that these are not caramel coated it can be any kind of apple however I do recommend sticking with these kinds if possible.
Granny Smith is a tart apple if you like tart and sweet. It can be sour so be aware.
Jongolds, Pippins, Pink Ladies, Jonathans or Cameos are also good. Yes some of these I have not heard of but I am aware of.
I would advise avoiding red delicious because they can be super sweet. By themselves that is great, however as we are already going to be dipping them in something sweet this would not help and is advised against unless you WANT that super sweetness.
I got the idea from here Taste For Adventure By tablespoon and decided to add my own spin to it so to speak. :-)

You will NEED:
- Popsicle sticks, often found in the kids craft section.
- candy melt of choice, if you can find the limited edition colors great, if not go with what color you want for the holiday or season.
- food coloring regular or neon (depending on if you want dark or neon colors is up to you)
- wax paper or plate to place apples to cool on
- microwave safe bowls (enough for each candy melt color of choice)
- apples of choice depending on taste.
- enough coconut or vegetable oil for 3 table spoons

OPTIONAL Seasonal items:
liquid flavors
sprinkles
non pareils
candy discs/necco wafers
candy sprinkle stars, circles or what have you
character themed sprinkles
pastry bag or spoon

First step, get your candy melts of choice and food coloring. Now if you are satisfied with the color of the candy melts already this disregard the food coloring.

The candy melts shown are just color examples, depending on the time of year there are more or less colors and flavors available.  If you want a darker color than what is available this is where the food coloring comes in.

Next, the bowls and candy melts, ONE COLOR per bowl and 3 table spoons of vegetable or coconut oil per mix. The oil helps keep the candy melt consistency, especially when adding food coloring. Melt in a microwave safe bowl as directed, stir and add a few drops to enhance or darken the color and stir again.

Third step, set aside wax paper on the counter or enough plates to set  your apples on. Put one popsicle stick per apple to prepare them for dipping. Also make sure the bowl is wide enough and deep enough to properly dip or at least rotate the apple to get a good coating. Once properly coated, set each apple aside on the wax paper or cooling plate to dry/harden.

If you went with pastel or bright colors then the picture below is what they will look like. NOW if you went with the chocolate raspberry or other flavors that is great too!
Here is where the twists come in.

Using sprinkles of any kind or even drizzling this is where the themed part comes in. For spring or summer you can use sprinkles, themed or shaped sprinkles to place over the apples before the candy melt hardens.

These are sprinkles/non pareils or themed sprinkles, also known as butterfly sprinkles, star sprinkles and the tinklerbell themed sprinkles pack. For spring the butterflies or regular pastel sprinkles work great for the candy apples. The darker hued tinkerbell sprinkles may be better for summer or a themed party. The autumn leaves for fall/autumn and the christmas tree sprinkles for christmas! Again this goes to show that these can be done any time of year to fit the theme, NOT just halloween!

The liquid flavor is for the non chocolate candy melts as for the most part they are vanilla flavored candy melts with food coloring. I did one version of candy apples with green candy melts infused with a few drops of mint extract - just two or three will do it as mint is strong enough on its own - drizzled with chocolate candy melts.

Or for another way you can take some of the candy melt on a spoon and drizzle it over the apple. Wait until the candy coating has hardened, take the apple over another place hold it sideways and either drizzle with a spoon or pastry bag and drizzle over while slowly turning the apple.
For winter it doesn't have to be christmas colors, it can be blue, or chocolate and yellow to fit the autumn or thanksgiving time of year as well!
DO NOTE that if you are going to completely coat the apple in sprinkles make sure the candy coating is applied in an even thin coat that way its not too difficult to bite into. Too think of a candy coating makes it difficult to really bite into past the sprinkles part. Same with the drizzle effect, don't put too much on.
You can use smaller apples for the children as well to make them bite sized.

Or the final twist, and this should be done closer to serving time, cut up the apple, dip and cool in the fridge until ready to serve. I say closer to serving time as a cut apple left out does tend to brown. Placing them in the fridge with plastic wrap over the plate will help.

Hopefully this has been helpful. I plan to make winter versions for mine this month. Why winter? Well the thought of blue with white sprinkles reminds me of snow and in the middle of summer chilled candy apples are just the snack to cool down with! Just think, light or medium blue candy coated apples, with the bottom covered in white sprinkles and just a little on top.

I do apologize for lack of example pictures. Some of my older pictures of these were lost in file transfers. However I do assure you that the experiments were a success! If you are feeling bold enough with the mint chocolate version I suggest getting andes mints semi sweet baking chips for the candy melt.

Thank you for reading!
